Having visited the Danche washing station themselves, Noëlle and Dagmar came back completely captivated by the quality of their harvest. While Danche is famous for the striking, grand tree at its entrance, its secret weapon is actually its flat geography. Eliminating the need to haul heavy coffee up and down steep hills makes a world of difference for the workers. With less physical strain, the team can channel their energy into precise sorting and perfectly timing the drying process between shade and sun.
Located in Yirgacheffe, Danche thrives in the region believed to be the birthplace of both humanity and coffee. For locals, this is no coincidence; coffee is the cornerstone of their identity. It’s the home of the famous legend of Kaldi and his dancing goats; and today, both goats and vibrant coffee houses still line the local streets.
To enter a local coffee house is to step directly into a traditional coffee ceremony. Even on a casual street corner, the experience is mesmerizing: coffee flows from a traditional clay Jabena, fresh grass blankets the floor like confetti, and the cups are filled precisely to the brim. On special occasions, costly frankincense fills the air while bowls of popcorn, which pops and expands just like roasting coffee, are shared.
Instead of sugar, the coffee is often paired with a local fern-like herb called Tena Adam, which softens bitterness with the flavor of fresh spring blossoms; a note you might even detect naturally inside this very cup. We hope this exceptional coffee takes your senses on a trip to Ethiopia.
